My students and I love using Mentor Books and Sentences to frame our ELA block. Grammar makes so much more sense when it is taught through actual sentences. Writing is based on what we discuss about the book being used and incorporating the type of sentence being analyzed. Love the books chosen. They are engaging and my students love the language they can mimic.
I already own Volume 3 of this resource, so decided to purchase another volume so I can mix it up. Honestly, I feel that this approach to grammar works better than any I have tried. The kids like it, and the fact that it spirals helps with retention. It makes grammar meaningful in that it gets kids excited about writing.
My students feel really connected to these mentor sentences and the parts of grammar have actually stuck with them because of these lessons. This is a routine I will keep in place for many years to come.
