These I Need My Monster activities give you mentor sentences, grammar practice, and writing prompts built around Amanda Noll’s book. There are two levels of mentor sentence lessons, one for 2nd grade and one for 3rd through 5th. October is a natural time to read it, but the unit works any time of year.
The book is also a good mentor text for show, don’t tell writing. Students see the monsters described through their scary traits, then try the same thing in their own writing. I explain how I teach it in my post, How to Model Descriptive Writing With a Mentor Text.

I am a huge fan of the mentor sentences, and the writing project is extremely engaging to students while providing great practice at descriptive writing.
My students absolutely loved this resource. I have used it for the past two years and am planning to use it again this month. Every grade did a scaffolded description of their own monster. It was so fun to see the varieties of monsters and the students really enjoyed the whole process, including practicing reading prosody. This packet provided a wonderful, engaging month of learning!

My students loved creating their own monster and then writing about it. I had the students share their writing with a partner and the partner had to draw what they thought the monster looked like. They had a blast and were able to see where they could add more details to their writing.
