Description

Mentor sentences are the perfect way to teach grammar and author’s craft through examples of excellent sentences from your favorite read-aloud books! Mentor sentences can absolutely be done with kindergartners and first graders, too! Teachers will just need to provide a lot more scaffolding and guidance in the lower grades than they would withthe upper grades. This nonfiction unit is just what you need to continue mentor sentences in your Kindergarten, First Grade, or Second Grade classroom while studying nonfiction and/or Earth Science. The lessons provided are great for emergent readers, but second grade teachers, you can adapt this to your mentor sentence time as well by having students do more independently in their notebook instead of on the provided pages. (Read more here about mentor sentences in second grade.)

These mentor sentences are part of a balanced literacy approach. Students will listen to you read the mentor text, identify/notice words, punctuation, and parts of a sentence, read the words of the mentor sentence, arrange the words to re-form the sentence, learn about a part of speech and talk about other words that could fit into the sentence, imitate the sentence by writing in their own words, read their sentence, illustrate their sentence, and even create a class book that can be read over and over again. There is also a “quiz” for each week over the skill you worked on (two versions provided: one for emergent students and one for second graders). Your emergent readers WILL BE reading AND writing every week! DON’T FORGET to grab the NONFICTION Earth Science Better Than Basal Companion for this set!

DO YOU LOVE TO SAVE MONEY?

If you want to get all of the sets now to save money, you can buy the BUNDLE FOR THE WHOLE YEAR!

You can also choose to buy all 40 weeks of Mentor Sentences in a Hard Copy Book, which will also come with the digital version!

HELP ME PLAN!
You don’t need to do all of the mentor sentence lessons in the order they come in the units. When I created the numbered units, I put them in an order that progressed in difficulty, so these lessons spiral, but it is not necessary to stay in that order. The seasonal unit was created with holiday-themed books that can be used throughout the year.

There is a free download of the “At-A-Glance” for all 40 books! This download will help you see all of the skills covered in the Emergent Mentor Sentences if you’d like to “bounce around” within the units.

There are THREE volumes for grades 3-5 to help prevent repetition of lessons and books within the same school:

*The mentor sentence lessons I have created are adapted from the ideas of Jeff Anderson. These lessons were born from the routine that worked well in my classroom, and the demos and examples I present are variations of Jeff Anderson’s methods. This is not the only way to “do” mentor sentences in your classroom.*
