Description
This 1st and 2nd grade companion has two parts. The first is a set of eight graphic organizers that work with any nonfiction book. The second is a section for each of ten informational books about weather, seasons, the moon, and more, with activities written for that book and a writing prompt. Please look at the preview to see every page.
Part 1: Eight organizers for any book
- Ask questions before, during, and after reading
- Give three key details that support the main idea
- Define words using the text and an illustration
- Find examples of text features
- Tell where information appears: text, pictures, or both
- Tell the author’s purpose and how you know
- Find reasons the author gives to support a point
- Compare and contrast
These are blank organizers. Print them as they are, two to a page, or enlarge them as anchor charts.
Part 2: Ten book sections
Each book section includes:
- A lesson ideas page that lists reading and writing ideas for the standards each one supports
- Activities written for that book
- Possible answers for each of those activities
- A writing prompt that ties to the book
I listed more ideas for each book than you would teach at once, so you can choose the skills you need.

Pair it with the mentor sentences:
The Nonfiction K-2 Mentor Sentences Earth Science Unit uses the same ten books. Each book section here names its mentor sentence focus standard.
Questions about this resource:
Can I use the organizers with other books?
Yes. The eight organizers work with any nonfiction book.
Are answers included?
Each book-specific activity has a page of possible answers. The eight organizers are blank templates for any book, so they do not have answer pages.
Are the books included?
No. The books are not included. You need a copy of each book to use its section. Your school library is a good place to start.
What grades is this for?
First and second grade.
Does this go with the mentor sentences unit?
Yes. Both use the same ten books.
Please remember, this purchase is for the use of one teacher. It is not intended to be shared. Please use the ‘additional license’ purchase if more than one teacher will be using it. Thank you!
