Terrible Things by Eve Bunting is a book that lends itself well to helping students see a bystander in action who realizes one must become an upstander to stop intolerance. It is an allegory of the Holocaust but it does not have to be taught as part of a Holocaust lesson. In fact, you never have to even discuss the Holocaust if it isn’t part of your curriculum.

This pack includes teacher directions/suggestions, along with posters defining bystander and upstander and how to be an upstander, activities to help with comprehension of the text, as well as a reflection activity.
