Finding a Thanksgiving reading passage that works for every reader in the room is hard. This free Thanksgiving reading comprehension sample gives you one nonfiction passage about the presidential tradition of pardoning a turkey, written at four reading levels, with standards-based questions for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.
I wrote the passage at 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade reading levels, and wrote three levels of questions aligned to 3rd-5th grade standards. That means you can match the passage to the reader and the questions to the grade level. For example, a 5th grader reading on a 3rd grade level can get the 3rd grade passage with the 5th grade questions. That way you’re checking whether they can use the skill, not whether they can read the passage.
You don’t have to use it that way! It’s just one of several options built into the pack.
It doesn’t have to be a test. The passage and questions also work for independent practice or small group reading, which makes it an easy fit for the week of Thanksgiving. The questions are aligned to Common Core, but reading comprehension skills are assessed similarly across standards, so it works even if you don’t use Common Core.
This passage comes from my Mix and Match Assessments for All Standards. Teachers who use my Better Than Basal sets often ask how to assess after teaching with mentor texts. My answer is to assess the skill on a new text, so you can see whether students can apply it.
