All of my paired texts (provided in printable and Google App formats) are high-interest for students AND teachers (because who wants to teach with boring passages anyway?!) and they all meet the demand for more complex texts that students can use to compare and build knowledge to integrate information and draw conclusions. The mentor sentences routine revolves so much around discussion on Day One and Day Two, and practicing on Day Three and Day Four, but there still needs to be some time to check in on what students are retaining through a short formative assessment.I suggest using the quizzes that are a part of the mentor sentence lessons I’ve made as formative assessments rather than taking them for a grade, but there might be times where it is appropriate to use them for a grade, too. On Day Four of the mentor sentence routine, students write like the author. They should change the meaning and context of the mentor sentence, while keeping the style and structure that the author used.EVERY SINGLE WEEK, not just in the beginning when you introduce the routine, you will want to provide a model to hit those ever-important higher-order thinking skills.
