You Wouldn’t Want to Sail With Christopher Columbus!

Posting LATE (for me) for Collaboration Cuties’ Party, but you know… gotta make an entrance! 😛

I want to share with you about a book I first read about from Amanda and Stacia’s post!

This book is a HIGH interest non-fiction book packed with information about Columbus and exploration that you won’t find in your textbooks, for sure. I will be starting it this week -I won’t officially start my explorers unit until next week, but I can easily integrate this book into my reading mini-lessons this week. I will be focusing on context clues in non-fiction, so this book will be perfect for the skill! It is great for so many other skills, too. You could do some great close reading with this book because each “chapter” is only a double-page spread. Each would make a great short passage to use with small groups!

***UPDATED!*** It also just dawned on me that this book would be GREAT for opinion writing! I don’t know how I didn’t think of that when I first grabbed this book. 😛 The students could use this book as a model to describe anything you wouldn’t want to do, not just exploring… it is a great example of how to support your opinion with reasons!

You can grab the activity page I’ll be using with my students this week by clicking here or the image below.

My students are going to use context clues, the glossary, and maybe the dictionary to understand the vocabulary from the book. We will just do a couple words each day. They will also draw pictures in the third box to represent the word so they have a visual to refer to later.

Everyone have a terrific week! 🙂 🙂
