Mentor sentences are the perfect way to teach grammar and author’s craft through examples of excellent sentences from your favorite read-aloud books!
Making sure students feel represented in culture, gender, race, religion, and family structures is so important. This unit is just what you need to integrate some books into your lessons that also celebrate diversity and help your students see themselves in the story.
These can be used as either an add-on to your year of mentor sentences, or used to get started with mentor sentences in your classroom. They do NOT have to be done in the order they are presented in this unit, although I did choose several foundational skill lessons in case you do start the year with this set.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?
I walk you through each day’s lesson for 10 weeks- all the work is done! Each lesson includes the teacher sentence page, directions/guidance for each day for the teacher, the student sentence page for second grade as well as emergent with words out of order (students cut and glue them back in order), a flap activity for the skill of the week, the sentence frame for the teacher imitation, the student imitation page provided with handwriting assistance and without, a class book cover in color and black and white, and a quiz over the week’s focus skill (two versions provided: one for emergent students and one for second graders).

There is a 9-page introduction in this FIRST unit with pictures included of how I use mentor sentences in my room (VERY detailed, day-by-day), followed by 10 lessons for the following books:
