    Close Reading

Poetry doesn’t have to be saved for April! Use this pack to practice close reading in your classroom with poems in Google SLIDES to help grow your students’ love for poetry.

LOOKING FOR PRINTABLE PDF FORMAT? Click here to get this in printable PDF format.

Check out my blog post that shows a step-by-step lesson using a poem from this pack (including a freebie), as well as this SECOND post that includes a BONUS poem! (Both are included in the download in digital format.)

    Included in this pack:
Suggestions for use, Annotation Bookmarks, and the following poems found in the public domain with guiding questions (and answer keys) for the first, second, and third read:

In August By William Dean Howells (1902)

Bed In Summer By Robert Louis Stevenson (1913)
*can be paired with a text about the seasons or Daylight Savings Time

The Spider By Jane Taylor (1883)

    November By Alice Cary (1873)

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening By Robert Frost (1923)

Snow-Flakes By Fannie Isabelle Sherrick (1880)

    Mr. Nobody By Anonymous

My Shadow By Robert Louis Stevenson (1885)
*can be tied with Groundhog Day or a study about light

The Brook By Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1862)

Woodman, Spare That Tree! By George Pope Morris (1830)
*should be paired with Our Tree Named Steve

A Riddle By Hannah More (1818)

I have also inserted a “highlight box” on the title of each passage. Show students how to select the box, then copy and paste it to use for highlighting purposes in the text. They can resize the box by dragging the corners to highlight only what they need. They can also add text boxes, shapes, and arrows for annotating purposes.

My club units have been some of my favorite resources to create because the planning and creation were guided by the teachers using them!Because of the input from your fellow teacher community, I know these units will be such a benefit to you, too! Every unit in the bundle has: 📕a week of plans that integrate multiple skills and subjects📙detailed explicit lessons, including teacher samples📒a week-at-a-glance plan📗digitally converted activities in Google Slides and Forms, when applicable📘mentor sentence lesson📕reading and writing lessons📙integration of other subjects (science, social studies, or social/emotional skills)📒printables for skill practice📗at least one other text (poem, article, paired passages)* to integrate with your lessons *this will vary each unit depending on skills covered!📘short assessmentsCheck out the latest bundle - www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/MENTOR-TEXT-CLUB-by-Jivey-2ND-EDITION-for-Grades-3-5-7058941 ... This feedback means so much to me because as I’ve made my mentor sentence lessons over the last ten years, I’ve put so much thought into the way I craft my units and bundles! Thank you for trusting me! ❤️ #mentorsentences ... See MoreSee Less
