Description

This is a bonus mentor sentence lesson with the Jumpstart Read for the Record book, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sloane-Roach. Also, check out this blog post to get a free vocabulary lesson!

Mentor sentences for primary grades are part of a balanced literacy approach. Students will listen to you read the mentor text, identify/notice words, punctuation, and parts of a sentence, read the words of the mentor sentence, arrange the words to re-form the sentence, learn about adjectives and talk about other words that could fit into the sentence, imitate the sentence by writing in their own words, read their sentence, illustrate their sentence, and even create a class book that can be read over and over again. There is also a “quiz” for the week over the skill you worked on. Your emergent readers WILL BE reading AND writing every week! Although the lesson was designed for K-1, second grade teachers, you can adapt this to your mentor sentence time as well by having students do more independently in their notebook instead of on the provided pages. (Read more here about mentor sentences in second grade.)
