Description

Paired passages, or paired texts, meet the demand for more rigorous, complex texts with Common Core- especially these passages that students can use to compare and build knowledge to integrate information and draw conclusions. The digital passages in this set are great to stretch your 4th and 5th graders, and still appropriate for many students in middle school as well.

The assessments are provided in Google FORMS. The multiple choice options will be shuffled for each student, and the items will be automatically scored.

The passages are provided in Google SLIDES and can be annotated by adding text boxes. Students could use lines to underline or draw arrows with the line tool. I have also inserted a “highlight box” on the title of each passage. Show students how to select the box, then copy and paste it to use for highlighting purposes in the text. They can resize the box by dragging the corners to highlight only what they need.

You could allow the students to use their annotated passages for their assessments by having them share the screen (or “split screen”) for both files. I have also included the passages at the top of the assessments.

THERE ARE THREE PAIRS (six passages) IN THIS SET!

I have included high-interest informational passages about the American Revolution / Revolutionary War that you won’t find in your textbook! Passages included in this set are: a pair about King George III and the Acts he passed; a pair about the Declaration of Independence and how it was treason, as well as the traitor Benedict Arnold; and a pair about George Washington with details about the Battle of Trenton, along with the Battle of Yorktown.

AT THIS TIME, there are not multiple levels of passages included.

In my 4th grade classroom, I used each of the texts for close reading and annotating lessons- this helped ensure the students fully comprehended the texts before having to answer questions about both texts together. Click here to see a blog post showing how I model purposeful annotating! My students used their annotated texts to answer the questions. Since the texts are in the “stretch” range for 4th and 5th, I don’t give these texts as cold reads, but if you have students reading on a 6th-8th grade level, you definitely could! If your students have not been exposed to paired text questions, you may want to walk them through some examples before you ever take a grade.
