*The mentor sentence lessons I have created are adapted from the ideas of Jeff Anderson. These lessons were born from the routine that worked well in my classroom, and the demos and examples I present are variations of Jeff Anderson’s methods. This is not the only way to “do” mentor sentences in your classroom.*

This was a great activity to analyse some of the sentences in Th Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and encourage the students to write similar sentences.

I am confused about the example sentence for compound sentences. Why doesn't it have a comma before the coordinating conjunction? I get what you're saying and thank you for your response. I just wish the sentence would've been a traditional compound sentence. I am afraid it will be confusing to students trying to grasp the concept of two sentences joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction. I hate to drill that into them only to provide an exception as a mentor sentence. I love your stuff and have been using your mentor sentences with picture books this year. I am just disappointed because I was so excited to use this with the novel. I agree it is worthwhile to teach kids the exceptions to the rules, but I just don't feel like my kiddos are ready for that. Thank you.
