    Tried It Tuesday: Symbaloo!

    May 27, 2014

Have you heard of Symbaloo? It is a super cool website where you can bookmark websites… think Pinterest meets your Bookmarked Favorites List! I am sharing this cool site for Tried It Tuesday!

We are expected to incorporate online learning in our district, so this is one of the tools I am using to compile games and helpful links for my students to use. Instead of a list of links, this tool allows you to use icons and compile many more links into a smaller area. This is the start of a math symbaloo I’m working on for next year:

Each icon is a math game they can click on and it will go straight there! You can embed your symbaloo into a website, or just share a direct link. It’s a free site, and very easy to use! If you are looking for an easy way to share links with anyone, this is a great tool to use! :o)

Also- I almost forgot! Don’t forget to go see the awesome giveaway happening at the Teaching Trio! :o)

Workshop Wednesday: Wonderful Websites for Reading!

    March 5, 2014

I’m so excited to have a guest blogger! Things are cray-cray around here (totes magotes) and Alison, being the awesome BBB that she is, said that she would love to post as a guest today! If you don’t already follow this fabulous Floridian, you should!! She is too much fun. :o) I wish I could teach at one school with ALL my BBBs!!!
    Now, here’s my girl’s post!!
Hey y’all…it’s Alison from Rockin’ and Lovin’ Learnin’.
I’m guest blogging today for Jivey for her weekly
    Workshop Wednesday.
    Can you even BELIEVE it?
    How LUCKY am I?
I feel like a real life ROCKSTAR!
    Thanks, Jivey!
Today’s Topic: Wonderful Websites or Apps
I love introducing new websites in the classroom, but
it’s always nice to do use some oldies, but goodies!
The site I have chosen today is one that I have been using
    for the past five years.
    Have you ever used TweenTribune?
This site offers news articles specifically for kids
written BY kids and professional journalists.
I really like that they have different sites by grade levels.
    Grades K-4 (TTJunior)
    Grades 5-8 (TweenTribune)
    Grades 9-12 (TeenTribune)
    Spanish- (TTEspanol)
Teachers may go on and set up an account.
Students may add themselves and attach to your class.
I always create the accounts with my kids.
Once the students read an article, they may reply, but you
have to give the comments approval.
I make a really BIG deal about this and consider it
    a reading and writing assignment.
    I will check for
    grammar and conventions.
My students have a minimum of 25 words
    when writing a comment.
    My rule.
Here are the topics that students may choose from:
    Animals, Art, Book Reviews, Education
    Entertainment, Fashion
    Food & Health, Inspiration
    National news
    News you can use
    Odd news, Opinion, Science
    Sports, Technology
    World news

Articles are added almost daily so there is always something
fresh for the students to read.

    Example:

Check out this TweenTribune review from Common Sense Media:
(Common Sense Media-We rate, educate, and advocate for
    kids, families, and schools)
Parents need to know that the mission of TWEENTRIBUNE is to get
young readers to follow the news.
There are age-appropriate sections for kids, tweens, and teens.
The content runs the gamut from educational to fluffy,
with substantial coverage of celebrities and brands.
    Comments are moderated.

Now it’s your turn to link-up and share your wonderful websites
or apps that you are using in your classroom!

    An InLinkz Link-up

    Happy Wednesday!

Monday Made It: SMART Board Lesson!

    November 11, 2013

Hey friends! I hope you all had a restful weekend. I’m sorry that I was on a bit of a blogging hiatus for the last few days… no five For Friday, no Sparking Motivation Saturday, and no Mentor Text on Sunday! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ  Sometimes, it’s just very hard to juggle the blog in with all the day-to-day things I have going on, too. I know you understand! :o)

I haven’t made a whole lot this month, but I want to link up with Tara to share something I HAVE made recently!

One thing (among MANY things) that I’m “juggling” is integrating technology more into my classroom. There are some great SMART Board resources out on the web already, but they aren’t always exactly what I need, and by the time I edit them, I might as well have just made it myself. So I’m trying to create a bit more myself for my students to interact with…

This is one I made for mixed numbers, which we are working on now… the students enjoy doing things on the SMART Board WAAAAAAAY more than doing worksheets (it’s so much more fun to them, despite the fact that it’s the same problems!!)… I have everyone work on white boards or in their math notebooks to show their thinking FIRST and then they feel super lucky if I choose them to come show the class their work!

And you can grab it for FREE here! Now, I’m not promising anything over-the-top spectacular here, ok? But my kids enjoyed it, so hopefully yours will, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, don’t forget to come back and link up for Workshop Wednesday this week!

We are sharing one of our favorite chapter books with a lesson idea (good luck picking just one! hee hee)- this might be a read-aloud or a book you use in group. You can absolutely share a product in your blog post, give a freebie, and/or just describe a lesson that you do with it. It’s totally up to you! (But no direct product link-ups, please.)  See you Wednesday! :o)

    Must Have Monday: Dropbox App!

    May 28, 2013

Hi friends! I’m linking up with the sweet Sabra from Teaching with a Touch of Twang!

I blogged back in January about Dropbox…here’s what I said:

It’s completely free. You can store pictures, video, documents, etc and then access them from ANYWHERE. This includes your iPads, phones, and other computers! That means no more emailing things to your home email from school to finish after dinner… just save it in your dropbox! And the great thing is- it’s similar to GoogleDocs in that you can share with others with an invitation. Once you share a folder with someone, then anything they add to the folder, or you add to the folder, you both can access! It’s great for collaboration! *wink wink*
At the time, I loved knowing I had the app on my phone and my iPad so I could access things like pictures, but it wasn’t until this last month that I realized how PERFECT it is for us bloggers. How many times have you checked in on some blogs on your phone with a few minutes of downtime (or sitting on your iPad instead of your laptop) and see that a fellow blogger is having a flash freebie?? You might have thought you just had to go without because you weren’t on your computer. NOPE!! Tonight, Joanne from Head Over Heels For Teaching posted a freebie, and I didn’t miss out on it! I opened it in TPT on my phone and hit “Download.” It actually opens the document- when you have the Dropbox app, you’ll see this:

Press “Open in Dropbox” and it will open it in the app…

Just press “Save” and you’re done! Then later, you can access it from your computer to print! ๐Ÿ™‚ Easy peesy!

I like to save things in my dropbox that I want to print at school (because the laser color copier/printer just looks better…) – all I have to do is go to dropbox.com from any computer and log in, and everything I’ve saved is there! (No worrying about forgetting my external hard drive…)

I hope this helps you! I’d say Dropbox on ALL electronic devices is my Must-Have! ๐Ÿ™‚ What are yours? Link up with Sabra and share!
