Testing Treats and Treats for YOU!

    April 28, 2014

We are about to be in FULL TESTING MODE here in Ms. Ivey’s class. Desks separated, walls covered… the whole nine yards. To get the kids excited (as if, right?) I leave them a testing treat and note to find each morning on their desk. They keep the treat for when the test is completely done, so then they have something to look forward to! If you would like to use the testing treat notes I am using this year, you can download them for free! They go with Nerds, gum, Dum-Dums, Starburst, and Skittles. This one is my favorite:

Testing treat notes with Ideas by Jivey

I threaten tell the kids they MUST use their scratch paper on the math section of the test! It makes me crazy when I see kids trying to do math in their head!

**Because of testing, Workshop Wednesday is not happening this week!!**

The kids aren’t the only ones who deserve treats! You do, too!!

Make sure to check out the blog hop my BBBs and I have running for tips on how to survive the rest of the year, with freebies AND chances to win TPT cash or a Classroom Friendly Supplies Sharpener!

Also, be sure to head over to Emily or AMC‘s blogs! They are having a fantastic giveaway as they both just reached 1,000 followers!

Fun Lesson for Reading Standard 9 {freebie!!} and Workshop Wednesday Topic!

    March 4, 2014

I am so excited to share about a lesson idea that originated with Lessons with Laughter– she used the book, Vulture Verses, to help students create a class book of poems for the unloved.

Have you heard of this book?? I am always amazed when I come across a book I haven’t seen (since I’m a total book hoarder…) so of course, I bought it. When I saw the book, I immediately thought of a fun Seymour Simon book, Animals Nobody Loves.

I blogged about the book last year after getting my feet wet in close reading techniques. It’s perfect because each animal’s passage is just one page… well the poems in Vulture Verses are the same!! Each page focuses on just one animal that people don’t really care for too much.

These two books will address Reading Anchor Standard 9 perfectly! It says:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.9 Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.
We are doing this lesson this week in my reading small groups! I will give my students a photo copy of a page from each book on the same animal so they can write on it (remember, you can copy pages that are for classroom use!!) and they will use this activity sheet (which you can grab for free):
Here are the animals that are in both books:
    vulture (duh)
    spider
    skunk
    cockroach
bat (there are two kinds in the poems)
I may give them a copied page from Animals Nobody Loves at the end of the week to let them write a poem about an animal not already in Vulture Verses. They would love that! :o)
You can get more lessons like this here:
    Have a great week!

Tried It Tuesday: Sound Experiments with a FREEBIE!

    February 25, 2014

Happy Tuesday! I wanted to share our awesome sound experiments we did on Monday for our Sound Unit and link up with Holly for Tried It Tuesday! We learned all that we needed to know with the help of my handy-dandy sound interactive notebook activities I created (which are on TPT!) so that students could apply this knowledge to their experiments.

They were so excited when I told them last week that we would be experimenting with sound, but only if they learned all that they needed to know first… Giving them something to look forward to is always a motivator!!

I gave the students this Lab Sheet to use as they rotated through the stations:

You can grab a copy of this lab sheet for FREE by clicking on the images above or by clicking here!

Setting up these stations is SUPER easy! You will need two different sized tuning forks (one thick and one thin), a bucket or pan with water, a hanger with some string, access to the internet, and five jars with different levels of water (I put different colors of food coloring in my jars, too).

At the tuning fork station, students are striking the tuning forks to hear the difference in sounds. Then they also get to “see” sound- by touching the vibrating tuning fork to the surface of the water, it makes the water splash! (I had to show each of my groups because they wanted to completely sink their tuning fork…)

At the hanger station, they can hear how sounds travel differently through the air and through solids. They tap the hanger on their desk and hear a tiny clink… but with string attached to the hanger, wrapped around their fingers, and then fingers in their ears, it sounds very loud, almost like a gong!

At the third station, you could do this with individual computers if you had them, or like me- I had it projected on the SmartBoard! This is the website that goes with the lab sheet. I love those BBC websites, don’t you?

And last, at the water jar station, the students get to hear how varying levels of water can make different pitches in the jars. They had to arrange them from lowest to highest (don’t forget to tell them to mix them up for the next group). They tapped each with their pencil to hear the sounds.

My kids TOTALLY loved these stations!! I hope yours do, too! I’d love to hear how it goes in your room if you decide to do it, too! :o)

    Mentor Text: Nonfiction Articles

    February 2, 2014

Happy Sunday!! I’m linking up with those two Cuties, Amanda and Stacia, but I’m kind of cheating a little… it’s not really a BOOK that I’m linking up… I hope they’ll forgive me!

So, originally, I was going to share one amazing website with you, but then I visited my friend Jennifer’s blog over at Mrs. Laffin’s Laughings and lo and behold, I have another site to share thanks to her!! And both of them will create a great lesson you can do in the next couple of weeks before Valentine’s Day! :o)

The site I wanted to share is FULL of awesome projects that are done by students, for students. It’s called ThinkQuest. Sadly, they aren’t taking projects anymore, but the site is full of amazing projects that have been submitted since the mid-90’s. I am using this site to teach non-fiction secondary sources- I display a project on my SmartBoard and we read and navigate through together. You could easily have the students get on a computer and do this, too. The great thing about it is, all of these projects were approved so our students shouldn’t come across anything inappropriate if they’re “surfing” the site.

This morning, I read about a site that Jennifer shared called Wonderopolis. Another fun site full of nonfiction!! These are short articles that start out because someone had a “Wonder”- you can actually submit your own Wonders! The articles are perfect for close reading, and, as Jennifer pointed out, identifying text structure (which we are also working on now)!

So here’s the lesson idea for you… first click here or the image below to grab the freebie you can use in this lesson!

(This graphic organizer came from my February and March Themed Reading Graphic Organizers!)

I will show this ThinkQuest on chocolate, but mainly focusing on the dangers of chocolate. Then, we will look at the Wonderopolis Wonder: Can Chocolate Be Good For You? (I am also going to copy/paste the article into a Word document to print so that students can annotate on the article.) We’ll then complete that freebie you downloaded above to talk about the differences AND similarities that were found in the two points of view.

I hope you can use this lesson in your own classroom during Reading! And if not, maybe you can find some great articles or projects on the sites I shared! :o)

Don’t forget, everything in my TPT store is 20% off today!

Fun Fractions Freebie and My Truth Monday!

    October 28, 2013

Hi friends! I’m linking up with two of my BBBs for Math Monday! Make sure to visit Jess at I {Heart} Recess and Deirdre at A Burst of First for more awesome math ideas! 🙂

I am sharing an activity we used today in my classroom! We read the first part of the book, Working With Fractions by David A. Adler:

It’s a great introduction to all things fractions! As I read the first part of the book to them, we filled in a notes activity in the students’ math notebooks. You could really do this activity without the book, too. :o) It looks off-center because it is… I made it so that I could just cut off the edges to make it fit in their math composition notebooks.

Grab the freebie by clicking here or the activity above!

Oh! I almost forgot! I hope you’ll come link up this Wednesday for Workshop Wednesday. 🙂 We’ll be sharing how to integrate writing and another content area!

And finally, since it’s been a while since I’ve linked up to a “just for fun” linky, I’m going to link up to ONE MORE tonight. :o) Denise at Sunny Days in Second Grade is doing a fun one- My Truth Monday. And THIS Monday is a CREEPY one for this week’s upcoming holiday!!
