    Five For Friday Fun!

    April 4, 2014

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve linked up with Five For Friday, and we had a fun week, so I thought I’d share about it! Plus, I’m officially on SPRING BREAK! :o)

In math, we have been learning how to make and interpret line plots with fractions. Holly has an awesome game that I used with my kids in small groups this week so that they will be able to play it in a center when we return from Spring Break:

The kids plot amounts of a whole pizza (on cards), but for some, they have to figure out the equivalents.
Then, they figure out the total amount of pizza they have by adding all of the amounts together!
My kids are loving this activity!

As I shared with you on Wednesday, my kids were also working on a Geometry Menu in Math Workshop. One of their activities was to make a game, so they of course wanted to play their game!

We also have been studying about Harriet Tubman. I read them the book, Moses:

(which is a FABULOUS book…if you haven’t read it… you should!)

They had to write down facts they learn about Harriet on sticky notes as they listened (using evidence and inferences). Then, I had them get in groups of 6 and compare their notes. Any of the sticky notes facts that were similar, they stuck together.

Then they figured out how to combine their sentences into a paragraph, and wrote it on chart paper.

This is a great strategy to use to have students not only see how their thinking is similar, but also learn from each other! Some students wrote very basic facts, but then they were grouped with other students who were able to infer more, and hear things they might not have, so they still GOT that information from their peers.

We also worked on our new hallway display! I needed to get something up that was more “spring-ish!” We did a review of figurative language and had a figurative language picnic!

On a paper plate, they used one of the figurative language phrases that had a food theme in a sentence or two to show the meaning, and then drew a literal picture of it!

Speaking of figurative language, you only have a couple days left to grab this figurative language and poetry pack from Educents!

Get an extra 20% off with the code: ANNIVERSARY20! That means for 11 products, you spend less than $9! It’s a great deal- and I can truthfully say that because I own all these products. ;o)

    Sparking Motivation When You’re Away

    March 22, 2014

While my BBB Joanne is off enjoying the sun on a FABULOUS Disney Cruise (totally jealous…), I’ve been dealing with a crazy cold (or some kind of virus that resembles a cold…?) and had to take a couple days off this week to try to get over it. Well actually, the first day I took off was scheduled and I ended up sick! Don’t you hate that?? I call that a “personal health day” fail.

But, knowing that I’d be out, I tried to motivate a few of my kids that aren’t always “at their best” when a sub is there. I left dry erase marker notes on their desk!

I think it helped! I didn’t have a list of names from the sub when I returned, and instead I had very sweet get well cards from my kids. 😛

P.S. Have you heard of the newest Educents bundle? I am excited to be a part of it, with some of my favorites, including Joanne, Amelia from Where the Wild Things Learn, Theresa from Pinkadots Elementary, and AMC from Looking From Third to Fourth!

Click here to read more about it!

Have a great weekend! Don’t forget to come back next Wednesday to link up your ideas about how you teach the kids to write poetry for Workshop Wednesday! :o)

Poetry and Figurative Language Ideas Galore!

    March 21, 2014

Poetry is just so fun to teach. I hope you share the love! Next Wednesday, you can come back and link up to Workshop Wednesday to share how you teach poetry in Writing Workshop (or just get more ideas from others)…
…but for now, I wanted to give you some ideas of things I’ve done and LOVE!
I’m sure you know, figurative language is a huge part of poetry, so I spend time working on figurative language over the course of the entire year in reading mostly (and making them incorporate it into writing, especially with our mentor sentences), so that by the time we get to April for Poetry Month, we can really dive in! And now that Spring is upon us, it’ll be time to have a figurative language picnic again!!
Idioms and puns are some of the hardest things to teach kids, in my opinion, because they take everything so literally… so we really spend time looking at as many idioms and puns as we can. Two books I love to use are by Tedd Arnold:

I also love to use the chapter book, Punished, as a read-aloud so we can talk about all the puns in the book as we go:
The kids start incorporating these types of figurative language into their writing and conversation. They also love to tell me “you’re so punny!” if I make a groan-worthy remark. :o)
Check out these two products that your kiddos will love! The second product is even free! 🙂

This product includes 30 idioms with full color posters, matching games, interactive notebook activities, and assessments. It would be an excellent product to use to start off the year and introduce one or two idioms a week!

The interactive notebook activities are organized so that the students have to find the similarities among them- for example, these four had to deal with being scared or nervous.

And if your kids (or you) are tired of boring matching games, check out this fun post where I shared how to liven up those games! My kids loved playing with the idiom matches that are included in my unit.

This next product is FREE and one my kids LOVE because we make a class book!

First, I show them this video (song featured in Dumbo):

Then, they each get a page that they illustrate to show “the real thing” and the punny phrase. (For example, a housefly and a house fly: they would draw the insect, but also a house with wings, flying in the clouds!)

    Have fun teaching everyone!

    Thursday Throwdown: Interactive Games!

    February 6, 2014

Yes!! It’s Thursday… which means it is almost Friday!!!! This has been one of those weeks that I have been LOOKING FORWARD to Friday… maybe it’s because we actually had a 5-day week?? Anyway… I am linking up today to one of my besties, Erin, at I’m Lovin’ Lit!!! I just love all her ideas even though she teaches middle school… I can almost always adapt the ideas to my fourthsters!

Today, I wanted to share ways to make “boring” games more interactive. You know the ones. Sorting… Matching… I’m all about using those games, and for the most part, kids love them! They’d certainly never tell you they’d rather do a worksheet than a matching game… but sometimes, let’s be honest… flipping over a card trying to find its match, or moving some cards around to put them in order… it’s not that exciting. So I’ve adapted my games a bit to get the kids up and moving! I also love that I can take center games, that would usually take a week for all the kids to rotate through, and make them whole group games that take 10-15 minutes!

Yesterday, I teased you in my post about my idiom matching cards… they came from my 30 Idioms Pack.

I made all of my posters and the center game cards one of five colors when I created them. Soooo I sorted the cards out by colors, creating five sets of six idioms. Then, I split up my class into five groups. Each group got a set. They had one minute (I started out with two minutes but it was WAY too much time) to figure out the matches (matching the idiom with its meaning).

At the one minute mark, I walked around and told them how many they had correct. I didn’t tell them WHICH ONES were correct. Most of them actually figured out the meanings on the first try! I was so proud of them! But a few times, I had to say, “four are correct” and the group had to decide which ones they were sure about, and which ones they needed to change. One of my students piped in and said, “hey! This is like Hollywood Game Night!” I wanted to say, shouldn’t you be in bed when that’s on?? But I agreed- it’s just like the game where they have to put the celebrity photos in chronological order and Jane Lynch tells them how many are correct, but not which ones. My kids rotated through all five sets (10 minutes to do this activity, TOPS) and they seriously were SO excited to play. I can guarantee you I would not have heard the same squeals if I made them play the traditional match game. ;o)

Another traditional game that I make more interactive is number sorting. We are working on decimals right now, so I passed out number cards- one for each student. Then they had to put themselves in order from least to greatest, but there’s a catch… they CAN’T TALK. Oh man. You have to try this… it’s so funny how frustrated they get with people in the wrong place and they have to just use hands and facial expressions to tell them they aren’t right. For example… this happens EVERY year, no matter how many times we talk about the equivalents of tenths and hundredths (3 tenths = 30 hundredths). My tenths cards will line up as least because, as seen below, 3 is less than 10.

I let them get situated in a line, then I tell them they are wrong, and I ask someone who CLEARLY knows (based on their body language -tee hee!) that the tenths are in the wrong place to tell why. Then they have an “OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!!” moment and rearrange (as seen in the bottom pic). We have played this with fraction cards, too!

I hope these give you some more options to play games in your room! :o) I’d love to hear if you have any other ideas of making “center games” quick whole group games!

    Workshop Wednesday: Figurative Language

    February 5, 2014

Happy Hump Day! :o) Today, we are sharing about one of my favorite things to teach: figurative language! How do you teach figurative language in Writer’s Workshop?

We are working on adding idioms to our writing this week. We are FINALLY almost done with our Snow Globe Stories (between snow days and getting through the entire writing process, it has taken us forever…) and we are typing them up now. But, I always tell my students, their stories are NEVER done. There are always things we can add to it to make it better, even if it’s just ONE sentence! So that was my goal today… I wanted them to add one idiom to their story if they could. Before we went to the computer lab for typing today, I read the book Even More Parts.

It is jam-packed full of idioms! And it is so cute! We talked about what each idiom meant in the book- I let the students share if they had heard it before. A couple of the idioms, they had no idea about the meaning… like, “I went to pieces.” Which I suppose at their age, they shouldn’t know that it means losing all control because of emotions. Ha!!

Because many of my students have a character in their story feeling scared or nervous (because they are trapped in a snow globe), I chose idioms to teach them that would go with those feelings. I challenged them to find what these idioms had in common. The students took notes about the meaning of each idiom on a flipbook as we went over the posters:

As you can see- they found what these idioms had in common!

Most of them were successfully able to add an idiom into their story when we went to the computer lab. Some of them already had one in their story! I can’t always say this, but I am soooo excited to read this set of stories from my kiddos. (And you know that feeling… sometimes we just totally dread grading writing pieces!!)

The flipbook and the posters are in one of my newest products. Every year, I say I’m going to teach an idiom a week, and every year, my schedule gets overwhelmed and/or I forget. This is what prompted me to create my 30 Idioms Pack.

As you know if you’ve been a follower of mine for a while, I create all of my TPT products to use in my own classroom- I never make anything that is not for myself, too. I will use everything in this pack this year, but maybe not the same way as next year since this year is already over halfway through (EEK!!). I am going to show you later this week how I’m using one of the matching games in the unit- it is not the traditional way! It’s a great way to use matching games if the students don’t know the information on all the cards. How’s THAT for a teaser??? 😉
