Paired passages, or paired texts, meet the demand for more rigorous, complex texts with Common Core- especially these passages that students can use to compare and build knowledge to integrate information and draw conclusions. The passages in this set are in the “stretch” range for 2nd grade. They are leveled for third grade readability. For this reason, I would not recommend giving these as independent reading in second grade. They work well in whole group or small group close reading and annotating lessons!

These are provided in printable and digital formats!

    DIGITAL FILES:

The assessments are provided in Google FORMS. The multiple-choice options will be shuffled for each student, and the items will be automatically scored.

The passages are provided in Google SLIDES and can be annotated by adding text boxes. Students could use lines to underline or draw arrows with the line tool. I have also inserted a “highlight box” on the title of each passage. Show students how to select the box, then copy and paste it to use for highlighting purposes in the text. They can resize the box by dragging the corners to highlight only what they need.

You could allow the students to use their annotated passages for their assessments by having them share the screen (or “split screen”) for both files. I have also included the passages at the top of the assessments.

Do you need upper grades paired texts about winter and snow? Grab them here!

    *****************************************************************************

I have included two informational passages about snow: one about how it forms and one about the first photographer to capture snowflakes on film. There are also two passages about winter sports- one about how to ski and one about sled safety. Lastly, I have included the poem, “Little Jack Frost” along with an informational passage about frost.

There are two styles of passages provided to help suit various needs. Choose the style you like! There are not multiple levels of passages included.

    *****************************************************************************

In my 4th grade classroom, I use each of the texts for close reading and annotating lessons- this helps ensure the students fully comprehend the texts before having to answer questions about both texts together. Click here to see a blog post showing how I model purposeful annotating! You can use each of the texts for close reading and annotating lessons- this helps ensure the students fully comprehend the texts before having to answer questions about both texts together. Students should use their annotated texts to answer the questions. If your students have not been exposed to paired text questions, you may want to walk them through several examples before you ever take a grade.

Please look at the preview to see a snapshot of the set!

My club units have been some of my favorite resources to create because the planning and creation were guided by the teachers using them!Because of the input from your fellow teacher community, I know these units will be such a benefit to you, too! Every unit in the bundle has: 📕a week of plans that integrate multiple skills and subjects📙detailed explicit lessons, including teacher samples📒a week-at-a-glance plan📗digitally converted activities in Google Slides and Forms, when applicable📘mentor sentence lesson📕reading and writing lessons📙integration of other subjects (science, social studies, or social/emotional skills)📒printables for skill practice📗at least one other text (poem, article, paired passages)* to integrate with your lessons *this will vary each unit depending on skills covered!📘short assessmentsCheck out the latest bundle - www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/MENTOR-TEXT-CLUB-by-Jivey-2ND-EDITION-for-Grades-3-5-7058941 ...
