Description

Everything But The Books provides you with just that for all of ELA – you’ll get the standards-aligned integrated lesson plans, activities, checklists, rubrics, additional readings, outlines, response to literature prompts, opinion prompts, and text-based opinion writing prompts; and all you need to get your hands on are the mentor texts!

Using one mentor text in as many subjects and for as many skills as possible helps you maximize your time. This unit uses four mentor texts which you’ll need in order to use these lessons: The Perfect Pet by Margie Palatini, Dr. Coo and the Pigeon Protest by Sarah Hampson, Let The Children March by Monica Clark-Robinson, and The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. Don’t own these books, or can’t buy them? Check your libraries and search for online read-alouds of the text!

There are complete writing, reading, and mentor sentence lesson plans included which are perfect for 4th and 5th grade!

Although these were designed to be done with direct instruction, I have included Google Slides and Forms to the lessons for distance learning and 1:1 activities.

Not familiar with mentor sentences? Read all about them here!

WHAT’S INCLUDED?
Check out the preview for an extensive look at the resource!

There are 29 lesson plans with core anchor standards, objectives, and actions along with printable activities, posters, word lists, articles, samples, and checklists when appropriate.

Many of the lessons have reading AND writing standards covered, so you can use them during any point of your ELA block. I have provided a suggested sequence that completes the unit within 3 weeks. The articles and texts also provide integration with social studies (Civil Rights Movement) and science (environmental conservation).

**Depending on the ELA time allowed in your schedule, this may take more than three weeks to complete!**

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM JIVEY’S OTHER RESOURCES?
My other resources do not provide explicit sequenced weekly lesson plans so that you can move in and out of each unit as you need and go in any order you’d like. This unit has explicit lesson plans along with paired texts; mentor text activities; response to literature; mentor sentences; writing organizers, prompts, and samples; as well as text-based writing prompts and samples.

These sets will NOT use any of the books or articles previously used in other resources!

If you’d like reading activities without the lesson plans so you can use them freely throughout the year, check these links:

  • Better Than Basal (reading organizers and activities and writing prompts for mentor texts)
  • Paired Texts (paired articles with TDQs and constructed response prompts)

*The mentor sentence lessons I have created are adapted from the ideas of Jeff Anderson. These lessons were born from the routine that worked well in my classroom, and the demos and examples I present are variations of Jeff Anderson’s methods. This is not the only way to “do” mentor sentences in your classroom.*
