We have one rule in my classroom:
I love to introduce this rule with these two books:
I ran across this book on Amazon in my suggested titles…
This was the perfect time to pull out my THINK poster from “It’s Cool to be Kind!” (a freebie in my store!)
Another major lesson to build community is to learn to work as a team. I love Fearless 5th Grade’s Saving Fred activity, so we did it again this year! The students must get a life preserver (Gummy Saver) out from under a capsized boat (a cup) and around Fred (a gummy worm) WITHOUT touching anything with their fingers! They are only allowed to use paper clips, and they can’t impale Fred!
They also can’t drop Fred in the ocean (on the desk).
To be successful, EVERY student must participate- otherwise the gummy saver doesn’t get stretched enough and Fred gets dropped. Last year, I only had half of my class successfully save Fred. They broke the gummy savers, they drowned Fred (dropped him too many times)… but this year, EVERY group saved Fred! I was so excited! I hope this is a sign it will be great year of working together and getting along! :o)
Since this is such a fun motivator for students to work as a team, I’m also going to link this up with my BBB, Joanne!
