Sparking Student Motivation... with FOOD!

I'm linking up with Joanne today from Head Over Heels for Teaching! I'm so glad she's back in the bloggy world from her Disney Cruise! :-P
I have a couple motivators to share with you today. :o) The first is... FOOD! The sweeter the better, although they don't mind salties either. :-P

We did this activity on Friday for M&M Math Day on our ABC Countdown Calendar. I gave each group 100 M&Ms and they practiced fractions and decimals! They wrote the fraction and decimal of each set, compared sets, added sets as decimals, and made models/arrays of the sets. AND NOT ONE COMPLAINED! In fact, they were all helping each other, getting along, staying on task... because they knew they got to eat their M&Ms when they were done! :)

You can find this activity in my 4th Grade Common Core Aligned Decimals Unit!
*sidenote* I also just recently bundled all of my math units! The units are my best sellers in my store... and it will save you money to buy the bundles! You know... just in case there was a sale coming and you needed some math resources... :o) If you want to check them out, click on the bundle pictures below!

The second motivator I wanted to share with you today is a TEACHER motivator!

Isn't she wonderful?!? She is so right, too.

Go link up with Joanne to share your own motivators, and get some ideas from some other awesome bloggers about what they do in their classroom!

Also, don't forget about my Friday Feedback Frenzy- happening all weekend! (Weekend Feedback Frenzy wasn't alliterative enough for me... hee hee!)

  1. I love using food as a motivator during math lessons. Our school board has taken a strong stance against using food though : ( . I still try and sneak it in though.

    Thanks for the video link!!

  2. I love using M&M's during math lessons. It seems like it is one of the few things that no one is allergic to. I guess they are just chocolate and sugar! They are great for motivating students!

  3. We just used M&Ms in my math workshop to work on ratios last Monday. Then on Wednesday I gave the kids a recipe for one cookie and they had to make a proportional recipe for 24 cookies...which of course we then made from scratch and baked.

They get so excited when you intro food into things!

  4. Food always motivates me! I am sure it works with them too. ;). Love your ideas! :)

  5. Food is such a great motivator. My kids love anything that involves food too.

  6. How great is that video? I emailed it to my principal to show at a faculty meeting-it's perfect! I will do anything for M&Ms too! They just love those edible activities! Thanks for linking up and sharing!

  7. So happy to read about the fun M&M activity! After finding out my new grade level assignment I was a little bummed thinking that "the big 3rd graders" might be too big for fun activities, but your 4th graders proved me wrong! Thanks for sharing!!!

  8. Ohh munchie math! I'm sure your kids LOVED it! Kids are never too old for FUN activities - especially if they involve FOOD!

  9. It's amazing how motivating food is....instant engagement!

Love the video for teachers! I'm going to share it at my team meeting on Thursday. Have a great week! I appreciate all of your great ideas!
