Spring Break, Marshmallows, Harlem Shake, Tabs, and Freebie!

Man this was the LONGEST WEEK EVER!!! I’m linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching and Teaching Maddeness, as is the norm on Fridays!
#1: FINALLY!!!! This was the longest week ever because I’ve been counting down every hour of every day until SPRING BREAK! That’s right. All my BBBs who have had Spring Break already, and I’ve been so jealous of your time off… well mine started today at 3:15!!!
#2: Since the kids are a bit off their rockers on the day before Spring Break anyway, our school makes it even MORE FUN *ahem* 🙂 and we do something called MAD – Math All Day. We are set up into pods of 3, and we do the same activity with each of the 3 classes. My activity was The Marshmallow Challenge. It was so fun!! They were given 20 dry spaghetti noodles, a yard of string, a yard of tape, and a marshmallow with these directions:
✦Build the Tallest Freestanding Structure: The winning team is the one that has the tallest structure measured from the table top surface to the top of the marshmallow. That means the structure cannot be suspended from a higher structure, like a chair, ceiling or chandelier.

✦The Entire Marshmallow Must be on Top: The entire marshmallow needs to be on the top of the structure. Cutting or eating part of the marshmallow disqualifies the team.
✦Use as Much or as Little of the Kit: The team can use as many or as few of the 20 spaghetti sticks, as much or as little of the string or tape. The team cannot use the paper bag as part of their structure.
✦Break Up the Spaghetti, String or Tape: Teams are free to break the spaghetti, cut up the tape and string to create new structures.
✦The Challenge Lasts 18 Minutes: Teams cannot hold on to the structure when the time runs out. Those touching or supporting the structure at the end of the exercise will be disqualified.

The winner of all three classes was in my room!! Their structure was 19 inches tall!! 🙂

#3: To end this already-crazy-day, my class filmed a Harlem Shake video! I am so disappointed that I can’t post the video (because I did the “right” thing and asked administration… sigh.) because it is HILARIOUS!!! We had a blast. My kids had been begging me to do it (who knows where THAT started…), so I decided we could do it to promote our school dance that we are having for Relay For Life! Here we are in our Harlem Shake “garb.” 🙂 I figure this picture is small enough I don’t need to block out faces. 😉
#4: I created new tabs at the top of my blog for the Workshop Wednesday posts and Mastering Mentor Sentence series! I wanted it to be easy to access for everyone! If you haven’t read them yet, check them out (after finishing this post, of course!) – there is SO much good info there! I’m going to spend some time next week actually going back through the links and bookmarking/pinning some stuff I want to make sure I use.
#5: Y’all know I can’t leave ya without a Friday Freebie!! When I get back from Spring Break, we’ll be doing a review of the entire year in math. In five days. Yeah…….. so I’m going to try to have as many games incorporated as I can, including this one. Hope you can use it, too!
